Visual communication for the Web and digital platforms
Communication on the Web is in many ways similar to print design – largely, you will be dealing with image and text. However, alongside these key elements, you will also encounter various types of interactivity (buttons, for example), video, sound, animation and more.
Again, similar to print, you will need to establish a set of rules that will guide your designs and create a uniformity and consistency. Whereas InDesign employs paragraph styles, websites use Cascading Style Sheets [for more, see: CSS] to ensure consistency. Websites will also use grid systems [for more see: Grids] to help the designer plot the page.
Unlike print, you have several levels of interaction that you need to contend with, and you need to guide the user through these systems. There are many established systems that will be familiar to many web users, such as underlining links and making them a different colour to the body copy.
Icons such as the hamburger menu and home icon are familiar to many, but do not feel you need to follow exactly what others are doing. As long as you can establish a clear visual system that users understand, the site should be easily navigated.
Also, don’t feel that consistency means boring, plain design. You can challenge viewers as long as you don’t confuse them. Try to avoid systems that are too conventional like sticking to 100 per cent black text on a 100 per cent white background; and even though the work is destined for the screen, you can use texture.
